For Success

Every day I get asked what my favorite piece advice is. Let me tell you, your health doesn't have to be limited by a diet, a gym, or what you see in the mirror.

Your health is a reflection of your choices. The real distinction between healthy and unhealthy is giving a damn about your body; and making sure you do something--heck, anything--consistently so that you can live a long, active life, take care of yourself, and take care of others in this world.

I believe in sharing sustainable options, goals, and good behaviors. The thing that frustrates me most is the fact that we've lost sight of our true goal. We must find smarter ways for everyone to exercise and eat healthier.

Notice that I didn't recommend cardio or lifting weights, or recommend a particular diet. Nor did I say perfect healthy eating. Do I have any thoughts on my favourite strategies? Yes. But I refuse dogmatism and insist there is only one right way.

This is a recipe of failure. Only a few people are able to love healthy behavior.

And I will be completely honest: I've become one of them. All you have to do is feed me Brussels sprouts, chicken, and I'll smile bigger than the Enzyte man. However, this is not normal behavior and you shouldn't expect it from yourself.

We must do better at defining health from all angles. A healthy eating plan should include dessert. Walking is a great form of exercise. These are the kinds of activities you like, and you can make them part your life.

You don't have to fit your square life around the definition of fitness of someone else.

My journey has led me to a simple goal. To help you identify the types of exercise and diets that work best for you to make your life more enjoyable, healthier, and longer.

If you can use these options to gain muscle, lose belly fat, weightlift 400 pounds or get rid of baby weight, that's great. Those are bonus benefits.

Your job is to research all options. Healthy living is not a one-stop shop. While there's some Szechuan chicken that isn't good (yeah, that was my metaphor for bad information), there are so many great options you can eat without feeling deprived and still live a healthy lifestyle.

This is the larger message.

I encourage everyone to look into the many options available. It doesn't matter if you exercise at the gym, on the soccer field, or at your home. Healthy foods are the best, but it's okay to indulge in healthy food if you choose.

To realize this, you don't necessarily have to stare down at the barbell's 65-pound weight.
